Nos liens (4) - Noël et Nouvel An / Our Ties (4) - Christmas and New Years Eve

(English version below)

Noël et Nouvel An.

I am in the bus going back from the office. In the street I can see many flashing banners; stores are filled with starts, lights and garlands. There seem to be fewer lights this year, maybe because of ecological considerations. But it is difficult to ignore the fact that in two days it is Christmas day!

End of year festivities are a powerful telling of our ties. For the whole year we could ignore this, living our lives in our small local universe, in our personal bubbles, but comes this time of the year when we can’t escape. There lie two sources of our fundamental ties, each of them being a title of a song of the CD: Famille (Familiy), and Amis (Friends). Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

If there is a time of the year when both joy and fears collide, Christmas with the family is this time. It is just the way it is, this family we did not chose, this family we both cherish and avoid, this family that sings and grinds, speaking loud and saying nothing. Family manages to be all of that at the same time. Christmas reminds us of where we come from and what we have become. We question our ties with those who left, and we invent our ties with those who just arrived. This grandma died this year, and three babies invited themselves. These cousins left for South America, we will not see them this year. But it will be great to see the other cousins we did not see for long. Or this year will be quite intimate, because there are not a lot of people anymore. In short, there are all our biological and historical ties in Christmas.

By the way, isn’t Christmas celebrating the birth of a tie between God and us? The one who was called Emmanuel (God with us) came to remind us of the importance of ties (you shall love…) and told us that we were not alone in the universe because God cares about us…

A week later comes New Year’s Eve, telling us about our ties with others. Starting from a certain age, we celebrate it with friends. Every year, everyone wonders where he or she will be, and most important, with who. A summary of our ties with others is revealed. Who is close to me? Who am I close to? What is the shape of my relationships? Will I be invited? Who will I invite? We meet with friends who changed, with whom we reinvent our ties. We think of these people who are not there and we miss them. They live in us and we hope we live in them. Why do we send Season’s greeting cards, unless we want our ties not to disappear but to be strengthened?

So this festive season takes a photograph of our ties; it draws a map of our bonds. Somehow, all these stories and memories and fellowship are like these lines that children draw between numbered dots on a sheet of paper. A picture appears. And this drawing, made of all our ties, has something that looks like our face.

Yes, it’s me on this picture. These festivities are the occasion for me to gather all these ties inside of me, whether it concerns people who are there or not. Full of all these ties, I can see a better picture of myself and start inventing who I will be tomorrow, and who we will be.

So I tak the opportunity of the connection of this blog to wish you a wonderful and meaningful time of festivities. Let God fill you with ties, bonds, links, whatever you want to call them!

Nos liens (3) – avec soi-même // Our ties (3) – with oneself

(English version)

I'm a poor lonesome cowboy
I'm a long long way from home

There are guys who just figure
Have a problem with a gun

And a finger on a trigger

Can be dangerous, hurt someone

But problems solve much better
By keeping calm and true

I'm a poor lonesome cowboy
But it doesn't bother me

'Cause this poor lonesome cowboy

Prefers a horse for company

Got nothing against women
But I wave them all goodbye
My horse and me keep riding
We don't like being tied

There it is, my computer is like new, everything has been reinstalled. I could resume the work of editing. Everything is white outside, snow covered the land last night. I have a bit of time this morning, let’s go on with the theme of the CD.

One day I was quite lost in my life, and I asked a friend: “what’s the purpose of life?” He answered: “It is to learn to love and to be loved.”. I always kept his answer deep in my heart. Jesus says exactly the same thing. Like we already read, for him the purpose of life lies in being tied with God, with others, and with oneself. Here are a few thoughts about these three dimensions, beginning with being in relationship with oneself.

We were born in relationship with a family, but in order to grow up we have to learn to establish ties with ourselves. To become an adult, “man will leave his father and mother”. And only after that he “will be united to” his wife. It is as if we needed to learn how to establish ties with ourselves before being able to do it with others. Otherwise we will be tempted to use the other person to fill our emptiness or to replace our parents. However, loving someone means this person remains free, and when we use people we don’t respect them anymore. So we have to learn how to become good companions for ourselves. I have a model for that: he is called Lucky Luke. No Kidding. Here is the song he always sings when he’s going towards the sun on his faithful Jolly Jumper:

I'm a poor lonesome cowboy
I'm a long long way from home

If Lucky Luke left his family, he knows how to be a good parent for himself. He does not expect others to meet his needs, because he takes care of them by himself. He is autonomous. But he has not forgotten his home, he sings about it. He left, but he did not cut the ties. He knows where he comes from, his story and his family are in him, and it is a good thing. He is in peace with his roots, with whatever the good and the bad it represents.

There are guys who just figure
Have a problem with a gun
And a finger on a trigger

Can be dangerous, hurt someone

Lucky Luke knows some things can hurt. He learned to set boundaries. When other people transgressed our inner space, we fear it might happen again. As a result, we create a safety distance preventing everyone to get too close to us. But Lucky Luke thought about it, and he understood that some things done to him were not normal and unfair, and that other people should respect his boundaries like anybody else. So he is secure, and he can face things differently. He does not run away or defend himself with his gun:
But problems solve much better By keeping calm and true

Lucky Luke learned to be true with himself, welcoming everything in him without judgement. He is in true relationship with himself. Therefore he does not neglect a part of himself. He can make choices knowing it is him who chooses and not his fears, or his feelings of obligation or of anger. So he is free to establish ties, and he does: he knows how to commit himself for people as long as there is injustice.

I'm a poor lonesome cowboy
But it doesn't bother me
'Cause this poor lonesome cowboy
Prefers a horse for company

Got nothing against women
But I wave them all goodbye

My horse and me keep riding
We don't like being tied

Lucky Luke knows how to be alone, but in fact is not so lonely: he has got his friend Jolly Jumper. It is a paradox in deed to say: we don’t like being tied. If he says we, it means he is already tied, but he feely chose to whom.

In short, I think it is important to become a good companion for oneself if we want to become good companions for others. God plays a major role in this development, but we will come back to that in the third part.

What about you? What do you think “being in relationship with oneself” means? What does “Leaving father and mother” means?

In the next episode: to tie oneself to others.

Nos liens (2) - Le dilemme // Our Ties (2) – The dilemma

(English version below)

A suivre…

My computer is currently working on its own, I am re-installing all my programs because of a virus. It takes time, so while it’s doing its job, I’ll keep on writing about the theme of the CD : our bonds…

Like I said in my previous post, bonds are both attractive and scary. What’s going on there? It is as if we had to choose between impossible directions:

To Stay or to Grow, to Be an Eternal Child or to Cut Ties

There are bonds in our lives right from the moment we were conceived. We exist because a man and a woman had a special bond together. And right from birth we discover that bonds can be threatened. The child is separated from her mother when he comes out, he has no choice, he has to be born if he is to become himself. So right from the beginning we face a dilemma, which is going to happen again when the grown up child leaves the family home: to become ourselves we must leave, separate ourselves and become distinct from our family, but then what happens to these bonds? And if we want to keep these bonds, can we become ourselves?

To Love or to Be Free, To Be Lonely or to Be Imprisoned

Without bonds we die in our loneliness, but within them we fear we will be strangled to death. We desperately look for bonds to get away from loneliness, but as soon as bonds start to become too strong, they turn into menacing monsters. Either I am free, and I have to accept to live without bonds, without love, or I accept to be tied but I have to give up freedom. Am I free if someone else is able to make choices that will impact my life? Will I disappear if I love this person so much? Do I have to choose between loneliness and a prison? A bond that becomes too important represents the risk of becoming dependant, vulnerable, defenceless. In fact, behind this lies the fear of being abandoned. It would hurt too much to be betrayed. We have to protect ourselves, build a safety distance, even cutting ties if necessary. Otherwise we have to renounce freedom…in fact, it would mean giving up life itself.

To Take Care of Oneself or To Take Care of Others, To Sacrifice Oneself or to Sacrifice Others

So how can we attach ourselves to each other? If one thinks he or she is not good enough to be interesting at all, one will have to disguise him or herself. We try to guess what the others desire in order to fulfil their demands, and maybe we will be worth their friendship. I remember that when I was asked: “what about you, what do you feel like doing?”, I could basically answer nothing. I had such a habit to do what other people desired that I did not even know what I personally liked or not, what I really desired. I thought that if I wanted friends, I had to sacrifice myself, because if I tried to exist, I would have to sacrifice others and I would necessarily end up alone.

What can we do with such ugly options? What I shared in this CD is very exciting to me, because I now believe that these dilemmas are not the only existing ways. There are other possible paths allowing good and meaningful relationships.

When Jesus was asked what he considered to the most important thing in life, he answered : “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. (…) And Love your neighbor as yourself.”

So three dimensions seem important to explore about our bonds: God, our neighbour, and ourselves…

To be continued…

Nos liens (1) // Our Ties (1) - Introduction

(English version below)

A bientôt !

First I’d like to thank those who participated in my little survey on concerts, it was very interesting. I could sum up most of what was said by the words “bonds, relationships”. It seems that what we like in a concert is the relationship that is created with the artist and with one another, which the common experience of music creates.

I finally managed to deliver the third song to the sound engineer. Now that most recordings are done, I can work on one song at a time until it is finished. But winter is near, and viruses joyfully infect everyone, including my computer. As a result I’ll have to reinstall everything, it will take a bit of time. So for the moment I can’t work on the CD anymore.

In the meantime, I open a series of articles on the theme of the CD. After a (very) long period of reflection, I finally decided that the album would be titled “Nos liens” (our bonds).

Like I already mentioned, the general orientation of the CD came from thinking about loneliness. Even if today we are connected to each other with every possible means (mobile phone, sms, chat, Facebook, etc.), it still does not prevent from experiencing loneliness. It’s what a student in his small flat in a unknown city can feel, or the child who thinks it’s his fault if his parents decided to divorce. It touches the man who searches a mate soul on meetic.com or the old lady in front of her T.V. It may seem bizarre, but it is in cities I feel loneliness the most. When I come back from Geneva, late at night, I feel it’s possible to be so many people living beside each other while feeling quite lonely. It's all the signification of this trailer of the film "Crash". With soon 7 billion people living on the Earth, it should be possible that nobody might be lonely. And still…

Behind loneliness lays the question of our bonds, of what connects and binds us together. This is what I tried to explore with my songs.

These past years I reflected a lot about relationships. Christophe Maë sings: “Faut pas qu’on s’attache, et qu’on s’emprisonne” (“let’s not get attached to each other, let’s not be prisoners”), he’s telling very nicely about how uncomfortable we can be with relationships. Bonds are both attractive and scary. With a rope, we can be kept prisoners or prevented to fall from a cliff. The same thing seems to have both the power to keep us prisoners and to set us free.

In the next posts, I’ll share a few thoughts about “Nos Liens” (our bonds), please feel free to react in the comments and discuss it.

See you soon!

Comme les grands // Like the big guys

(English version below)

There are always older ones we look at and who belong to another world. When I was in kindergarten, I used to play with my friends on the cushions in a corner of the room while the teacher took care of the “big guys” – the 1st grade. I don’t know how she managed to deal with several classes at the same time, but this is how things were in this small school of Afa, my village in Corsica. When I went in 1st grade, I left the cushions to sit on the bench. I still remember the first book I read in its entirety: Yakari in The Land of Wolves. It was the biggest event of the century. The “big guys” where the 2nd grade, and 5th grade guys where already adults to me.

Currently my evenings and free days are dedicated to the terribly exciting activity of tracks editing. All the musicians I recorded are now reduced to tons of tracks I have to edit to retrieve the best of it. I can’t escape, it takes time. So in order to survive I dream about the first concert I will do when the CD is released, and the concerts that will follow. And for this I like to study how it happens with the “big guys”, with renown artists. I am not really used to go and see concerts, with my family we had not a lot of money, and it can be very expensive depending on who you want to see. But lately I tried to go to concerts, both for my pleasure and to learn: how do these artists begin a concert? How do they behave on stage? What do they say in between songs? What makes of a concert an unforgettable experience (or not)?

On Wednesday I went to see a concert of Cesaria Evora. It is a very little great woman, a grandmother who needs to hold on to someone’s arm to reach the stage. She’s a Black Queen Mother who visits her subjects with bare feet. She was surrounded by 8 extraordinary musicians who played songs with enthusiasm. The hall was full, and her voice full of sun made hearts and bodies dance. Here's a bit of her music:

I try to understand why I went to see her, and what I liked :
- I already knew her through her CDs and I like her music.
- I like who she is. She had hard times but she persevered and now shares the joyful and nostalgic music of her country. She’s like a benevolent grandmother.
- On the stage I liked the complicity of the musicians, their smile and the pleasure they had to play. Musicians who play without pleasure remove any pleasure from me.
- I liked the elements of mise-en-scene…The violin and the sax were dancing in the background. I see they worked on it, and I felt honoured they wanted to give us this in addition to the sole music.

What about you? What do you look for in a concert? What is there in a Concert that there is not in a CD? What makes a “good” concert”?

Let’s discuss this in the comments… :)

Clarinette Bis

(English version below)

Last night, a Clarinet came to play. He has an awesome name: Renato Mastrocola. I find this name extraordinary. When you hear this name, you suddenly pay to this person the respect due to a famous artist because he has an Italian name. It rings like “Pavarotti”. It makes me feel like shouting it loud like a frontman just before the artist enters, and his coming provokes a thousands applauses.

Renato belongs to this wonderful team of youth of my church who always supported me whenever I called them. Like the others, he sat in the Shelter and he worked, sweated, and struggled to catch my impossible notes. When I would tell him :“It’s ok, this should be fine”, he would always answer: “No! It is not yet fine, record me again!” And he was right, this last additional take was always a little miracle because it was the best one.

At the end of the recording, I could say I had an additional instrument on the CD. There is still quite some work to do. But each recording brings me closer to the goal, and it was another step accomplished yesterday.

Strasbourg

Dans les belles rues de Strasbourg... // In the beautiful streets of Strasbourg...

“When I look in your eyes
I can feel the butterflies
I love you when you're blue…”

Bonne nuit…

Près du canal à Strasbourg // Beside the channel in Strasbourg

After a busy week-end, it’s Monday night and my house needed some cleaning. So I invited Norah Jones at home while I was tidying my flat. Just a phone call and Norah was knocking at my door. She sat at the piano, and her warm voice started filling my apartment with a sweet calm.

“When I look in your eyes
I can feel the butterflies
I love you when you’re blue…”

It is a daily miracle that people did not even know hardly a century ago…being able to invite a musician at home anytime, with only a CD.

I now dispose of a clean bathroom and the apartment is ready to welcome the (real) musicians who are going to come and record soon.

This calm night is good after this busy week-end. With the B.O. we were in Strasbourg for a concert. The challenge was pretty big: half of the band played in another band in the morning while the other half (whom I was part of) had to go to Strasbourg, perform the concert and come back in the same day. And we only had two hours to set up the P.A. system.

Juste before the concert, we were quite nervous when we gathered in a small room of this Army of Salvation church. Then the “major” (I don’t know the word for their pastor in English) told us that this morning, in that very room, he had fed a woman with her 6 children who had slept in the street for 4 days. This church daily feeds homeless and poor people... Poverty knows no frontiers. I felt really small.

With the kilometres and the fatigue, this concert was not our best one. But it is always amazing to see how some people manage to find things they like and come to us to tell it! Despite our wrong notes. Beauty is in the eyes of the one who looks.

Oh, sorry, Norah has to go, I must show her the way to the door. Good night…

Une journée molo // a slow day

(English version below)

Avec Hernan au studio // With Hernan in the studio.

Oh, it’s so good to have my life again ! I did not realize how much I had put pressure on myself…This morning the sun welcomed me and painted a beautiful picture at my window. It feels good to be welcomed this way in the world of the living.

Today I had taken a day off to work on the CD and go to the mix studio. Given I had not done much, I simply went to listen to the song already mixed by Hernan Hidalgo, from the studio Sliver-Street. It sounds really good! I’m looking forward to hearing the rest!

Given I had this day off, afterwards I decided I had the right not to do anything. And I did it. Oh, it’s sooo good! A big plate full of pastas in front of dumb American series, it was just pure happiness. No guilt, that’s the best part of it.

And given the weather was so beautiful and the colours of autumn are very bright at the moment, I went to a field nearby and sat down on a tree trunk. I performed a private concert for a crowded audience of crawling and flying insects and all sorts of birds. I could even say goodbye to Mr. Sun who had welcomed me this morning.

The Maker is an incomparable artist in front of whom the troubadours can only kneel down.

In short, I am now in front of my computer with a good mug of Horlicks, and I managed to write a post to tell I did not do anything. No kidding.

Decision...

(English version below)

OoooooooooooooooO

So it’s decided...the CD will not be out for December as planned.

After a short night (we returned at 2 a.m. after the concert in Grenoble), I resumed working on the project and fought for the whole day long on trying ton correct some instruments tracks that did not sound right. At the end of the day, I had to accept this would take more time than I had expected.

If I want to release this CD at the date I had decided (with the concert on December 6th), I would have to send the album for duplication in two weeks at the latest. I counted the things I still have to do, and the time I have left with my job and next week-end’s concert. If I maintain the release date, I will dash the CD off and die from stress and lack of sleep. A little conversation with my small local committee (my neighbours Nono and Hervé) started to insert some wisdom in my head.

A night of sleep on that finished to convince me. So…I abandon the idea of releasing the CD in December and I postpone the concert.

This morning, I am both sad and relieved.

I am sad because I thought with great expectations to this concert in this particular time of the end of year. But I tell myself it is only postponed.

And I am relieved because I think of all the things I had gave up doing in that project because of the lack of time. I will be able to do them after all. For example, I wanted a cello solo on one of my songs, but I had given up the idea because there was no time left. So I would have done a song on half the dream I had planned it to be. Now it will not keep the taste of regret, because I have time to add it.

It may appear like a detail, but it makes me think of something greater than that: not giving up our dreams. How many times did I let circumstances or life decide for my dreams? Our dreams are worth fighting for; we should not give them up.

So this is it, we will have to wait for the CD a bit longer…sorry! But I hope it means it is just going to be better!

So for you to be patient with me, I put two songs online you can download here. They are ideas of songs I quickly recorded a few years ago to remember them, so they are far from being perfect...

Voix et piano // voice and piano

(Englise version below)

So that was two additional days of studio recordings. I took two days off (I think I will have nothing left for Christmas...). Yesterday, we recorded vocals. Nono and Marina Vuilleumier came to add their beautiful voices...I was sad I could not have a gospel choir for this CD, and they managed to make one with their only two voices! Well, I sang, too, so it was three voices, bust still...!These girls are great! Photos here.

Today, Super-Dolson had one hour to come and play the piano for my sister's song, he sacrificed his lunch break (and his lunch) to do this. We had only one hour, it was a bit stressful but Doslon is a professional...On the diaporama, you can only see him setting up the mics, but he played indeed! After he left, I took the opportunity to add a piano track to another song.

I can't say how much I feel little and thankful for all these people who came and help me. The CD would not have been what it will be without them...

Tomorrow night, Concert in Grenoble! I'm looking forward to it!

Lorsqu’un ange passe… // When an angel is passing by…

(English version below)

OoooooOOOoooooO

Today I was eating in the Manor Cafeteria during my lunch break, and my head was full of sounds; you know, this kind of noise that happens when there are too many thoughts speaking at the same time. And then an angel visited me.

She was quietly walking by the barrier. She hid behind a huge flower pot, stopped for a few seconds, and then resumed her exploration. Little by little, she got closer to my table. When she saw me, she looked at me with beautiful brown eyes. Then a little voice said “Hullo!”. My angel had her head covered by pretty little dark curls, a brown skin and little red boots.

“Hello, I told the angel with a smile. What’s your name?
- Buillaur fble fble…
- Oh, I see…”

Then my angel quietly kept on exploring the place.

I was astonished with such calmness, such assurance and trust displayed by this little girl. She did not fear. She had looked to the stranger I am without blinking, without thinking I could do any evil, without imagining anything. Her heart was completely open, fully dedicated to the exploration of her world. A trusting heart.

Jesus said that if we want to enter the Kingdom of Heaven, we had to become like children (Mark 10.14). Today my little angel just gave me a glimpse of what it could mean. If I apply it to my life, I guess it could mean walking with a fully trusting and open heart, dreaming only to explore all the treasures that this life undoubtedly contains. It means trusting God, trusting Life, trusting what He put in us. We have in us resources of courage and strength we don’t even imagine: “Whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst; the water that I shall give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life", also says Jesus (John 4.14)

So I admit I currently stress and complain a lot, but I remember today that there is more to this life than this, and that life remains a magical surprise. I am very excited by the concert we are going to perform Saturday in Grenoble, because we are going to laugh, to go crazy, to live something great together and with the audience.

So I want to be more like my angel…learning how to live more and more with a heart open wide.

La dernière ligne droite // Final run

(English version below)

I am sitting in the bus, on the road to the office. The labtop is warming up my kneels, and it is a nice feeling considering how it is cold since last week. Yesterday the singer said ok for the new version of the song, the last one! (see previons post) I am wearing big headphones, and I am listening to the whole CD for the first time. This morning I got up early to perform a simulation and burn a CD with all the songs to check that it was working. 68 minutes of music! The limit of a CD is about 75 minutes. I am relieved because I will not have to cut any song down.

I am in the last run. The date for the official concert has been set: Sunday December 6th at 15:00 in the SDA Church of Collonges. I don’t have the choice anymore, I must have the disks in my hand by that date! So I have to work on many things at the same time: recordings, mix, graphic design (thank you Nono who is helping me about that), while still working at the office and performing two concerts on the next week-ends. I have a wonderful and totally inefficient way of facing all this: diving under the [coquette] and staying there.

I am scared, I procrastinate, I’m paralysed, there’s a butterfly in my stomach. I agree I put myself in that situation all alone, but hey…

So now is an excellent time to learn again, every day, how to give up, how to trust, how to exercise peace, how to walk with God.

This week-end I received a powerful encouragement through a short film of 20 minutes called “The Butterfly Circus”. You can watch it at this address. I love what the circus director says: “The harder the battle, the greater the victory!”

One step of faith at a time…

Composition / Writing

(English version below)

OooooooooooooooooooooooO

Today I had some time to work on the project at last. It was dedicated to writing! While some songs are already finished and sent to the sound engineer, one last song remains to be written! In exchange for a service I asked my sister, I promised her I would write a song for her, and I've been working on it for a few weeks now! I suggested a theme, then we had a brainstorming together to find some ideas, and I started writing.

I already showed her a version of the song, but she was not satisfied with some parts of it. I found her remarks were justified, because I wanted to finish this song quickly and some sentences were a bit easy and commonplace. So today I dived in it again with the old rhymes dictionnary I stole from my mother.

I just sent another version to my sister. I don't know what she'll think of it, but I am very happy she pushed me further, I think at the end the song will be far better than if she had not been there.

The song is about family (what a coincidence...! :)

Et après...ça continue! // And after...it goes on!

(English version below)

After this intensive week, my days off are over, I went back to the office today. At the end of the afternoon, I could give the first finished songs to the sound ingineer. Let's party!

In the evening, Serge-Henri Edmond came to play piano on "Je me souviendrai de toi" (I will remember you). He was courageous enough to play, because he was just coming from the dentist and he still suffered! I wanted him to sing as well but we decided we would not add up to his torture!

Tonight a recording session with a musician was cancelled, so this evening is less busy than planned, and it is good to rest a bit. So I want to thank all the people who gently invite me to not forget to eat, to sleep and to take care of myself! Thank you folks! By the way, there will be a song for you in the CD, it is called..."Amis" (friends) ! :)

Jour 6 / Day 6

Diaporama ici. // 10:00 – Today Hans comes back to finish recording all the basses and vocals on a few songs. Diaporama here.

(Diaporama ici) // Hans is still recording when the door bell rings with the next musician. It is Oliva Rakotonananahari who comes to play an instrument I will discover thanks to him: the bassoon. It is a very impressive instrument, full of keys. I had inserted a bassoon line in the song “Les vieux” (Old people). It is one thing to play an instrument on the keyboard, but it is different when you see the real instrument! Oliva explained me that this instrument is used a lot in orchestras, but often overlooked. I learn a lot on instruments with this album indeed! (Diaporama here)

// 21:00 – Tomorrow I will see the sound ingineer, I absolutely need to finish a song ! The song « Zambe » won the contest. I start to record the final voice. Vocals are the hardest parts of all. Contrary to a guitar, I can’t change the strings to make it sound better! I’m sure my neighbours (my sister and her husband) loved hearing me shouting in the mic up to midnight!

Jour 5 / Day 5

// 08:30 - Beginning the day with a good hot british Horlicks. Mmmh, it's good because it's pretty cold in here! I prepare the Shelter because this morning Nico comes back to play the violin. (PS: I am not sponsored by Starb...well, I've already said that I think.)

09:00 - Voilà, Nico est en train d'enregistrer. On voit qu'il s'applique. // 09:00 - There it is, Nico is recording. We can see he's taking great care to do it.

// 11:30 - The artist still working hard. He completes the song "Amis" (friends) with a wonderful contry/bluegrass touch. The song is almost done, I only need to record voices now.

12:00 - Montage, montage, et encore montage. (même photo, mêmes heures ch...èvrement ennuyeuses devant l'ordi) // 12:00 - Editing, editing, and editing again. (same picture, same boring hours in front of the computer)

// 15:30 - I am still in front of the computer, I did not eat since yesterday night, and I am going mad!!!! Dear computer, it's time for a break otherwise you are going to fly through the window.

16:30 - encore du montage... (cette journée est passionnante) // 16:30 - editing again (this day is very exciting)

// 18:00 - End of day. It's friday night, and I bless the enventor of the day of rest!!!!

Jour 4 / Day 4

// 10:00 - This morning, someone came to play jazz clarinet. He's called Claude Roux, he plays in a few bands such as Stenkartet or Voxalpina. He came to add a gypsy touch to the song "Je procrastine" (I procrastinate). Mmmh, it's good!!! Yummy!

// 13:00 - Editing, again and again. It's sooooo boring!!!! I can't stand it anymore!!!!

// 16:39 - the ice from my fridge just broke loose because I forgot to plug it again after yesterday's recordings. It seems there was a need for that.

!!!!!! // 20:30 - My national-Rasta-colombian man (and guitarist and brother-in-law) Hervé came to add some background vocals. There it is, the song "Je procrastine" (I procrastinate) is the first song (almost) finished!!!! (which quite ironic considering the theme of the song...)

// PS: I am not sponsored by Colgate either.

Jour 3 / Day 3

// 09:00 - I difficultly try to understand how the wonderful Triton synth works. Fred Leduc lent it to me. I am part of these people who always start by trying to use things before reading the manual...what about you?

// 13:00 - Photo shooting for the cover with Nono. On the first album, there was a phone. On the second, there will be a bench (it is as useful as a telephone for communication).

// 15:00 We start recording voices with Nono. I have to explain her that the anti-pop is NOT the mic.

// 18:00 Recording of the mandolin on "Amis" (friends). It is almost finished, I just have to add the voices!!!

19:00 - Jogging - Respirer! Lâcher l'écran de l'ordi! // 19:00 - Jogging - Breathing! Leaving this computer screen alone!

// I start recording my voice. It is terrible. Voice is the most difficult instrument, because we ARE the instrument. Everything goes into our voice when we sing, the places inside where we are stuck, our fears, the we we look at ourselves, our inner balance, our body. If someone wants to have to face who he is, let him sing...!!!

22:30 - Dodo. Encore une journée bien remplie. // 22:30 - Sleep. Another busy day is over.

mercredi 7 octobre 2009

Jour 2 / Day 2

// 09:00 - building work. I had to transform the Shelter in order to be able to stand under it, it is better for singing. I even found a way to use the useless telephone book I receive every year in my mailbox (on the right chair).

// 13:30 - Nico Meyer comes to record his violin. The challenge is to give an irish and country touch to his usual classical way of playing...

// 19:00 - Video-meeting between Paris and Feigere with Nono and Cedrick Fernandez to discuss about the design of the CD, the posters and the website. I am not sponsored by Apple or Skype (but if they want to give me money, why not?).

20:30 - 22:00 - Hans vient mettre la touche finale sur "Zambe". // 20:30 - 22:00 - Hans comes and adds the final touch to "Zambe".

Le jour 2 est fini... // Day 2 is over...
