Le chant thème du Camporee / The Camporee Theme Song

(scroll down for English version)

Mon ami sud-africain Mark a vérifié l’anglais.

OOoooooooooooooooooOO

Next August will take place the European Pathfinder Camporee in Rome, which will see 2500 youth coming from all over Europe. Last year Corrado Cozzi asked me to write a theme song. Some songs are born in a night. This one took a year, with the help of many friends. Here’s the story of the song.

Writing

In spring 2010 I started writing, I only had one verse and could not finish it. Then I worked on it with a friend in Australia, Rachelle, whose finaly led to finishing the song. My south-african friend corrected the English, then Aina helped me write the Italian part, which was enriched by the Italian couple Irene and Lucas in March 2011. An international team work over one year.

Then came the test phase. I have no idea if animal testing helps science, but it sure does with music. The Pathfinder being a relatively non-endangered species (although...), I thought that sacrificing a few ears would not threaten the existence of the whole race. So I started hunting. One Friday night there was a worship rehearsal in my church, I suddenly saw a flock quietly grazing on the benches (yes, benches can be grazed). So I furtively approached them to test my song. Thanks to the very collaborative mood of the guinea-pigs, the experiment was a success. It especially helped to adjust the respective cry of males and females. The song was officially finished.

This theme song talks about the adventure of faith and is based on the life of Paul. It is an invitation to regard life as an awesome adventure to experiment with God instead of viewing it as something to secure and to keep as comfortable as possible.

The song

He left everything behind and he went
Walking the path of the wind
Burning inside with a passion that would never end
‘Cause on this morning everything had changed
Everything he had believed
The day the one he was fighting showed him he was blind
Nothing ever stays the same
When we meet the Lord who came

Chorus
Adventure is waiting for us
We’re not made for ordinary lives
Cause the Maker of all has great plans
There is nothing to fear in His hands
The world suffers and needs people who will live
The adventure of faith

Today we can go with God on this way
Carried away by the wind
Trusting that whatever happens he‘ll always be there
Bearing a treasure within jars of clay
In our weaknesses we’ll see
That nothing’s impossible for those who dare to believe
Nothing ever stays the same
When we meet the Lord who came

Bridge (in italian)
The adventure of faith
The adventure waiting for us
Let there be trust, let there be love
Let there be joy, let there be peace
Let's walk with the Father who guides and shows the way

Recordings

For the occasion I had to re-build the Shelter to record the main guitar and the lead voice. Then Jo and Pierre came to play additional guitars, then we recorded drums in the church with Sam and Dolson.

Then I gathered a flock of male and female Pathfinders. They did a tremendous job in a single afternoon (comprising the learning of the song).

Lipdub

After recordings, an awesome team of Pathfinder breeders started working on a lipdub. The principle is simple: you record a music video with only one shot, without stopping, with a maximum of people singing along with a playback. It’s a challenge because if there’s only one mistake you have to start all over again. So they started writing a scenario, and worked with the Pathfinders again and again. At the end of the afternoon we could only do half of it. Pathfinders are a species hard to gather, so we would only have another afternoon to finish it, otherwise we would have to give up.

Then came the fateful afternoon. We only had 2 hours left to do it. There are some days when working up a sweat is not an expression. Like, for instance, when you run under a hot sun, on rocks, after a whole flock of Pathfinders with a camera in the hands, desperately trying not to fall flat on your face. I will never watch a wildlife documentary film the same way again.

In short, at the 6th shot, we thought it was done. But then we decided to do one more to be sure. We were all exhausted and wet, but everybody courageously took their position again. And when once again the breeder Mike shouted: “Action!”, we all started running.

When we watched the rushes, only the 7th shot was good. A perfect number.

Well done everyone, and thank you so much!

PS: I hereby declare that no Pathfinder was harmed during the whole recording process – this is for the PCS (the Pathfinder Care Society) and the ESAPT (European Society for Alternatives to Pathfinder Testing).

PS2: I love you pathfinders! :)
