mariages. Les chansons se baladent toutes seules maintenant. J’apprends de
temps en temps qu’elles voyagent par-ci par-là. Ce ne sont plus les miennes et
c’est très bien comme ça.

Maintenant, on me demande souvent : « Alors, à
quand le 3e album ? ».
Je me souviens

reparlerai.

A suivre…

OooooooooooooooO

(English)

It’s been a
long time since I gave news about the music projects. It’s not that nothing
happened, but it’s not easy to take time to write. I do share some stuff on the
Facebook page (Pleaaaase like it, it helps us for web exposure!) and my twitteraccount (yes, you can follow it as well) but it does not allow me to share
in-depth thoughts and stories. So here we go! There’s a lot to say so I will
break it down into a few different posts.

The second
album has already been out for 3 years. In concerts we laugh with “Je
procrastine”, we hope with “The End of the Story”, we commit ourselves with
“Song for Charles”, and “Deux” became the opening song for many weddings. I’m
amazed at how songs can travel on their own once they’re released. They’re not
my own anymore, and that’s a good thing.

Now I’m often
asked: “When comes the album number 3?” Especially from parents who are fed up
with hearing the same songs over and over again in their car because of their
kids. By the way, I am so touched by children response. I was surprised because
I did not write these songs for kids at the first place but we receive a lot of
appreciation from them. They often come to us at the end of concerts to get
autographs. Or parents tell me that a concert made their son or daughter decide
to start learning an instrument. I am so happy about this!

Anyways,
going back to the initial question, what about n°3? Well, the good news is that
I definitely want to produce a new album. With the Bande Originale, we’re on
board, more than ever. We’re even planning to go pro. Yes. I will tell more
about this later. However, currently I don’t have enough songs worthy of
landing on an album to start recording. Part of the problem is very simple –
time.

Like most
of my musician peers, I have a job outside of music to earn a living, which
leaves little time to create. I’m spending about 3 hours per day in public
transportations to go back and forth. I won’t complain – it’s a tremendous blessing
to have a job, and unlike in other places I can sit in the bus, which gives me time to write (like, say, a blog
post!). However when I arrive home at the end of a long day, I admit it’s
easier to turn off my brain in front of a TV series than starting to work on my
second job. Maybe one day music will generate enough money and I won’t need two
jobs at the same time. But for music to generate more money, I need more time
to work on it…and we’re back at the same point.

Furthermore,
my “musician” time is actually 10% of music. The other 90% is sending mails,
making phone calls, editing video, promoting our music, writing descriptions
for the press book and exchanging with the graphic designer, investigating
what’s legal or not to do, sending CDs and invoices, settling the accounts, organizing
the band, leading rehearsals, scanning internet and newspapers for performances
opportunities, etc. For example, waiting by the phone hoping for concert requests
simply does not work. For (almost) each concert I book, I am the one who
initiated the process. And all of this, again, takes time. I am so grateful for
the people who lighten that load by giving me a hand, and I know I can
definitely improve in delegation. But even delegating takes time.

why CD n°3 is not out there yet. But I must say it’s not entirely true. The “I

like to admit (if not the majority), the time reason is just an excuse to cover
up other issues.

Mon ami sud-africain Mark a vérifié l’anglais.

OOoooooooooooooooooOO

Next August will take place the European Pathfinder Camporee in Rome, which will see 2500 youth coming from all over Europe. Last year Corrado Cozzi asked me to write a theme song. Some songs are born in a night. This one took a year, with the help of many friends. Here’s the story of the song.

Writing

In spring 2010 I started writing, I only had one verse and could not finish it. Then I worked on it with a friend in Australia, Rachelle, whose finaly led to finishing the song. My south-african friend corrected the English, then Aina helped me write the Italian part, which was enriched by the Italian couple Irene and Lucas in March 2011. An international team work over one year.

Then came the test phase. I have no idea if animal testing helps science, but it sure does with music. The Pathfinder being a relatively non-endangered species (although...), I thought that sacrificing a few ears would not threaten the existence of the whole race. So I started hunting. One Friday night there was a worship rehearsal in my church, I suddenly saw a flock quietly grazing on the benches (yes, benches can be grazed). So I furtively approached them to test my song. Thanks to the very collaborative mood of the guinea-pigs, the experiment was a success. It especially helped to adjust the respective cry of males and females. The song was officially finished.

This theme song talks about the adventure of faith and is based on the life of Paul. It is an invitation to regard life as an awesome adventure to experiment with God instead of viewing it as something to secure and to keep as comfortable as possible.

The song

He left everything behind and he went
Walking the path of the wind
Burning inside with a passion that would never end
‘Cause on this morning everything had changed
Everything he had believed
The day the one he was fighting showed him he was blind
Nothing ever stays the same
When we meet the Lord who came

Chorus
Adventure is waiting for us
We’re not made for ordinary lives
Cause the Maker of all has great plans
There is nothing to fear in His hands
The world suffers and needs people who will live
The adventure of faith

Today we can go with God on this way
Carried away by the wind
Trusting that whatever happens he‘ll always be there
Bearing a treasure within jars of clay
In our weaknesses we’ll see
That nothing’s impossible for those who dare to believe
Nothing ever stays the same
When we meet the Lord who came

Bridge (in italian)
The adventure of faith
The adventure waiting for us
Let there be trust, let there be love
Let there be joy, let there be peace
Let's walk with the Father who guides and shows the way

Recordings

For the occasion I had to re-build the Shelter to record the main guitar and the lead voice. Then Jo and Pierre came to play additional guitars, then we recorded drums in the church with Sam and Dolson.

Then I gathered a flock of male and female Pathfinders. They did a tremendous job in a single afternoon (comprising the learning of the song).

Lipdub

After recordings, an awesome team of Pathfinder breeders started working on a lipdub. The principle is simple: you record a music video with only one shot, without stopping, with a maximum of people singing along with a playback. It’s a challenge because if there’s only one mistake you have to start all over again. So they started writing a scenario, and worked with the Pathfinders again and again. At the end of the afternoon we could only do half of it. Pathfinders are a species hard to gather, so we would only have another afternoon to finish it, otherwise we would have to give up.

Then came the fateful afternoon. We only had 2 hours left to do it. There are some days when working up a sweat is not an expression. Like, for instance, when you run under a hot sun, on rocks, after a whole flock of Pathfinders with a camera in the hands, desperately trying not to fall flat on your face. I will never watch a wildlife documentary film the same way again.

In short, at the 6th shot, we thought it was done. But then we decided to do one more to be sure. We were all exhausted and wet, but everybody courageously took their position again. And when once again the breeder Mike shouted: “Action!”, we all started running.

When we watched the rushes, only the 7th shot was good. A perfect number.

Well done everyone, and thank you so much!

PS: I hereby declare that no Pathfinder was harmed during the whole recording process – this is for the PCS (the Pathfinder Care Society) and the ESAPT (European Society for Alternatives to Pathfinder Testing).

PS2: I love you pathfinders! :)
Gaël Cosendaihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04007532677522364558noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-61912776874971269.post-54138478219192266752011-03-18T11:00:00.004+01:002011-03-21T09:47:47.298+01:00Tournage du clip vidéo / music video shooting session

Photographies: Marie Fresnay
(English version below)

Qui encourage qui ?

OoooooooooooO

I recently received a letter from the prison of Untsville, Texas.

It was from Charles Don Flores, sentenced to death penalty after he was accused of murder. With the Band we support him since the ACAT association asked us to perform a concert for him in 2006. I had written a song for him at that moment (“Song for Charles”). Since then, we regularly exchange letters (besides, he’s much more faithful than me in answering letters!). Here’s an extract of this letter:

“Please do not ever get discouraged with the idea that what we do is not enough. That the Devil tryin to make you doubt yourself, our cause and thus crush our spirit. One voice might not be heard but when there are many voices they cannot be ignored! Just like your French about little streams make Great rivers. We have to keep at it living in faith knowing that what we work for shall come to pass. That’s what Jesus was talking about in the Bible when he told us to pray and request for what we need, then live and be thankful for it like we’ve already received it. It’s the intention and the act that we put to it rejoicing that we’ve made it and when we do this many of us the Universe – All that Is – God hears our requests.

We have to keep on guard watching for that evil little voice that wants to get it in and whisper and take away our faith and our joy and happiness knowing we have a Lord and through His Power all shall be well.”

OooooooooooO

I’ve heard the other day that an amnesiac can not have projects and plan things for the future. Without past, one can note have a future, because one has nothing in store to imagine it. In every choice we make lies the whole experience of our past experiences.

Future is a present given by our past.

At the beginning of this new year, one can sort things out in the box of events filled by the previous year. We can throw useless things in the trash bin, we can save good moments in a special box for memories, and then we may open a map and think about the next year’s journey.

But after we’ve done all this, the only moment we can live is the present. Past is gone already, future does not exist yet. Again, the only moment we can live is the present.

As a pastor kid, I feel as if I always lived amongst cardboard boxes. When we moved somewhere, we knew it was not for a very long time, so boxes became part of the decor. I remember there were even boxes we brought along with us from place to place without ever opening them. How do you settle in a house when you know there are good chances you’ll leave it soon?

And yet, in the middle of the boxes of our unavoidable next move, my mother would put our curtains, our sheets, she would plant vegetables if we had a garden. In short, our house would be covered with our colours so that it might become our home, even if we did not know how long this would last.

We are in danger of always living in a sort of temporary camp, with our hand on the door handle, always preparing ourselves for after. Our bodies are more or less there, but our spirit is working elsewhere, as if life was always to begin tomorrow, after, and somewhere else. After what, and where?

So the only thing we have to learn is to inhabit the present, to taste the intensity of here, to explore the train of now. It’s a wonder why such a simple skill takes so long to master. Maybe this is what it means to begin living Eternity.
Gaël Cosendaihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04007532677522364558noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-61912776874971269.post-1869558551423120492010-11-14T14:40:00.003+01:002010-11-14T14:44:16.745+01:00Ikea et l’art de la déambulation / Ikea and the art of strolling

(English version below)

Finalement même Ikéa m’a appris quelque chose.

OoooooooooooooooO

I just arrived from a trip in Australia. I went there first to travel and see friends again, but I had the opportunity to perform a concert in a pub with about sixty enthusiastic Australians who appeared to love speaking French! It was great! I came back with a heart filled with memories and affection. I am now back with new resolutions. I had promised there would be another blog after the making-of the album “Nos Liens”. And I procrastinated. But I missed saying silly things. So tadaaaam! Here is the Return of the Blog.

Recently a thought came to my mind, that we can learn from everything. I could learn from a trip Down Under, and I could learn from an afternoon spent at Ikea in Geneva. Several weeks ago, I went there for the second time of my life. The fist time had lasted not more than 5mn and was a total failure.

On this day, I only needed a pillow and a cover. I was driving near Ikea, so I thought I could as well make a quick run to it. It was a fatal error. One does not make a “quick run to” Ikea. I went in, and found myself in the middle of what seemed someone’s apartment. The person who lived there either lacked intimacy, or loved welcoming people home, because it was packed full with a noisy crowd. I was about to apologise for my intrusion when I saw the labels on all the furniture. I discovered with horror that Ikea’s employees had skilfully and viciously scattered everything so that finding even a fork might become a treasure hunt worthy of the fiercest scout. My first visit lasted exactly 5 minutes. I bravely ran away.

I needed 5 years to overcome the trauma. A sudden desire of inviting people home opened my eyes on the fact I was living in a sort of camp more than in a decent apartment. So I took a big breath, gathered my courage, and walked again towards the fateful store. The little boy was going to brave the wild and wide and dangerous world again.

I needed to master the supreme skill: the art of strolling. This funny word means losing one’s time, and doing it on purpose. I realised Ikea did teach me something. When I am obsessed by what I am looking for, I become blind and I miss it. Now I’m learning how to lose my time, how to have less control over things, how to worry less. I’m learning to walk with open eyes, and this is what I will try to do for this blog.

Blessed are those who stroll, for they will find God – and incidentally a fork in Ikea.
The end of the story…and its beginning

(English version below)

OooooooooooooooO

There it is.

After three years of work, struggle, procrastination, joy and tears, it is there. While I was at the office, my sister was on the lookout while a truck full of cardboards was losing its way in the Savoie country. She had to guide it with the telephone until it finally found the house, and unloaded its precious load in the garage.

In the night I quickly went home before running to the last rehearsal before the tour. The cardboards are there, piled in a corner, and they symbolize the end of a story and its true beginning. My cellar is ready, I emptied it last week from its useless stuff. It’s funny how we often do cleaning in our rooms before beginning a new step in our lives. We have to give up some things in order to make room for new things that will take room within us. It is very good.

I’ll be in touring next week, so I won’t be able to deliver the CD before April 12th. If you want to receive a message when the album is available, please add your email in the newsletter of www.gael-music.com.

So this blog stops here. Its mission was to tell the story of the recording of the second album, and now it is done. It was a wonderful adventure, full of suspense and unexpected developments, and bonds. Thank you to all of you who walked with me by dropping by and encourage me with a word or an idea, it made out of this a common adventure.

This blog will not disappear, it will stay there to tell the story. If you happen to fall on this page for the first time, you can read the whole adventure from the beginning here.

As a conclusion…there is no conclusion!

The end of the story is not the end of the Story. I’m in writing this message in the train, as I am going to Roanne to get the camping-car with which the B.O. is going to leave tomorrow morning. At the window, the shining sun seems to tell the whole land that the long night of winter is over. Flowers bloom, life is flowing in trees again, and this week we celebrate the resurrection of the one who gave us the hope of Death’s defeat. With this victory, he tells us that our worst story is never the end of the Story. There is more to see than what we see, there is more to live than what we experiment, and tough times always carry within them seeds of healing and resurrection. This bond Jesus gives us will never cease.

So…this is the end of this blog, but a new one will be announced by the newsletter! See you soon for the beginning of a new adventure!

The suspense is not over. With the different teams (design, mastering, duplication), we did our best, so everything is sent to duplication now, we’ll see if the CD will be delivered on time for us to go touring…!

Meanwhile, we still organise the concerts (see the complete list here). On Sunday I had rehearsal with part of the orchestra who will play a the opening concert on April 24th at Collonges Sous Salève. This will be great!

Today I would like to talk about the subject of one of the songs of the CD. I wrote it for a very special friend. His name is Charles, and he is in the Death Row in Texas. Charles Don Flores is Mexican, he was charged of murder in 1999 and sentenced to death after a hasty trial. Since then, he’s always claimed he was innocent and he’s fighting to get a new trial.

In 2006, the ACAT (Action of Christians against Torture and Death Penalty) asked us if we could make a concert for him. For the occasion I composed a song and I started corresponding with him. He is someone very impressive, he shows a lot courage and persistence within very, very hard circumstances. Most of us would have given up. We managed to make him hear the song by broadcasting it on a radio, not far from his prison.

When I am discouraged, when I feel I don’t have strength anymore, or when I lose the meaning of what I do, I think of him and about how he keeps on fighting and going forward. It helps me stand up and keep on fighting as well.

The world must know what’s going on in the Death Row. These people are legally murdered, while all researches have shown that:
- death penalty has no dissuasive effect
- it only produces an additional mourning family
- it does not heal the pain of the family of the victims
- it perpetuates the violence it is aimed to stop

I hope the “Song for Charles” will help people to hear about Charles and his fight. If you want to write him, he’ll be happy to answer you. You can find his contact on his website (http://www.charlesdonflores.com).
Gaël Cosendaihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04007532677522364558noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-61912776874971269.post-44448185765310958092010-03-12T19:16:00.004+01:002010-03-13T09:33:30.561+01:00Showcase Paris

(Paris, Paris! - Photo: Cédrick Fernandez)

(English below)

(Café l'Arbalète - Photo: Cédrick Fernandez)

The CD has still not been sent for duplication, I hope it will be ready for the tour…

In the meantime concerts are getting organised, and I took a break and went to Paris. It was good to go away from my office and my studio computers. So I played in the concert of Peter and then on Sunday I performed a small showcase to announce the concert of April 3rd. When you sing in a café, the difficulty comes from the fact that you don’t know if the people applause because they liked the song or because there was a goal on the television above my head!

I’m exaggerating, in fact we were a group of friends and the time we shared was great. It is always frightening to sing new songs because it is difficult to know whether the songs are great or mediocre. So it helps to start with a small audience.

In this showcase, I fellowshipped with some friends, it was a great time. We shared about our lives, studies, work, projects…Then I sang “Les matins” and it made me realise something. When we are kids, then teenagers, then students, we always have the impression to be in preparation for the moment when life is going to begin. Then comes the end of studies and…life does not begin. Or at least this feeling of settling down, of “arriving” never comes. And we are surprised! Then we realise that the adventure already began a long time ago, we are right in the centre of it.

This is where I am so happy to live this adventure with God. Like a child who can go and play because he knows his family is not far and he is in security, I have the feeling I can surf on life, fully enjoy it, build, share, because God is never far. With God, the adventure is always called “Today”. I forget it far too often!
Gaël Cosendaihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04007532677522364558noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-61912776874971269.post-30970710684197535302010-03-02T20:32:00.000+01:002010-03-02T20:32:45.086+01:00La semaine d’après // The week after

(English below)

OoooooooooooooooooO

This is the first week-end I can stop and rest. On Friday I packed the Shelter. My apartment is suddenly bigger. I have lived with the Shelter in the middle of the room for 9 months. The time of a pregnancy…baby is soon there!

I find it hard to find words to express what I feel. It is a mix of satisfaction, freedom, relief and surprise. For the last three years, my time, my energy and my thoughts were focused on this goal. Every morning I would wake up and there would be a night or a Friday or a Sunday I would spend on it. I was always thinking about how to make this or this song sound better, worrying I would not find the good ideas. And finally everything was done. Little by little step by step, it came to reality.

I often wonder why it took so much time and energy, but I think I set very high expectations on this project, I had to reach the limit of my abilities, and go even beyond. It was not easy but I don’t regret anything, it was worth it!!!

So now I try to rest and take some time for myself. Yesterday I actively did nothing. Next week-end I’ll be in Paris to sing with my friend Peter who is performing his first concert. Maybe I’ll take the opportunity to go in a café and sing with whoever wants to come!

Talking about news, there’s still suspense in the air, I don’t know if the CD will be sent this week for duplication, but it does not depend on me anymore. While Bob is working on the mastering in the US, Cedrick keeps on working on the design. On my side I start working on the tour. At the beginning of April, the whole B.O. team is going to jump into a camping-car to travel for a whole week! Here are the dates and the cities where we are going to perform concerts (details will soon be available):

3 April : Paris
4 April : Orléans
5 April : Angoulême
7 April : La Rochelle
9 April : Bordeaux
10 April : Limoges

There will also be an opening concert with the musicians that played for the CD on April 24th, possibly in Collonges, I am waiting for confirmations. For more informations, you can connect to www.gael-music.com and subscribe to the newsletter or simply click on “Concerts”.

It’s going to be great!!!

Once my sister Joana had fun making posters with Indiana Jones for a concert with the B.O. It portrays quite accurately the feelings I currently experience: Like in the film, there’s a huge round rock rolling after me with this writing on it: “Date of the first concert”. Will the CD be there on time? The motion soundtrack plays in my head: Ta, tada, daaam, ta, tadaaam…

So here are the last updates:

Last week was very intense. Each evening I stood in front of the mic or I sat at the computer to finish the songs and send them to the mix. Last Saturday night I sang for the last time, on the song “Cache-Cache” (Hide and seek).

For the song “Je me souviendrai de toi” (I will remember you), I thought it would be a shame if my sister Joana did not add her usual voice on it. So I jumped in the car with my stuff and drove for about two hours to me on time for my nephews nap. Hop, I stole my brother-in-law’s office and we started recording. The solo part of the neighbour’s chainsaw was beautiful. But we managed to record anyway.

This morning I woke up at 5:30 to finish the last two songs before going to the office and send them to Hernan Hidalgo (the sound engineer). Maybe I’ll make it in my lunch break. I have to finish, there’s no choice, he goes to Argentina in March. Ta, tada, daaam…

While he finishes the mixes, Hernan sends the finished songs to the mastering*. Thanks to internet, I could have the mastering done in the States, in the same mastring studio (http://www.ambientdigital.com/) as my favourite singer (Andrew Peterson)…Yummy! But will it be ready for the end of the week? Ta tada daaam…

At the same time we work on the CD design with Cedrick Fernandez, everything must be ready to be sent at the beginning of March. Ta, tada, daaaam, ta, tadaaaam…!

It’s tight, but we may make it. I really don’t regret postponing the release date. It gave me the necessary time to do every dream I had left for this album, so there is no song where I feel frustration! Oh, what a delight to reach the end of this!

(English translation below)

An additional week has passed, with long hours sitting in front of the computer, or standing and singing in front of the mic, or sitting while doing nothing else but praying. Martin Luther said that the more he had a heavy schedule, the more he would spend time praying. Sometimes it’s stress and fatigue that make us fall on our knees. But the distance between the ground and our knees is the longest distance between us and God. And prayer is not an place from which we come out the same.

So this week was very intense, I could deliver a few additional songs, and most of them are almost finished. There’s work remaining, but the end is near. One or two additional weeks!!!!

And I have lots of debts. It is not about money, it is about giving thanks. Once again, wonderful people spent time, energy, and talent to come and make a beautiful bunch of bonds out of these songs. First it was my sister Nono, who is involved a lot in the project. Despite being tired, she came and sang and encouraged me and taught me a lot of things about singing. Then came Serge-Henri Edmond, who added his deep bass voice to a reggae-like song (I forgot to take pictures!!!). Then Marina Vuilleumier came as well, spening an entire day with Nono to sing background vocals. And finally Ana helped me with the computer while we were in front of the mic.

They are only a small portion of all the extraordinary people who gave me a hand. You may have seen a lot of them on this blog. Yes, I am indebted to them a lot. I will never be able to thank them enough. Thank youuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!!

Last, but not least, I learned something special last Friday. Nono was going to record her song but she was tired, so she asked me to take her hands and pull her hard while she was recording. At the beginning I thought she was joking. But she was not!!!! She told me it was an exercise she learned in her singing classes. Given we have to resist to the person who pulls you, it brings energy and it gives strength to the voice. So I pulled Nono for a good part of the recording!!!!

(English version below)

OooooooooooooooooO

09:00 – It’s hard to get up. Don’t play games until midnight if you want to work on the following day.

10:00 – Beginning of the session. I am currently working on the song for my sister. At the beginning I thought there would only be a piano and her voice. Now there’s a piano, but…no, something is missing. I listen to Cesaria Evora’s music to hear the type of instruments she uses. I’ll make a few tests and see how it sounds.

14:30 – lunch time. My brother-in-law gently suggests I prepare the meal. Finally I prepare the salad sauce and he cooks pastas. Life is exciting and full of surprises. I change the strings of my guitar because I am going to record with it this afternoon.

16:00 – Recording with the sound engineer of the day: Wonder-Ana. AnaPaula Keller is a Brazilian friend; she decided (though it is impossible to understand why) to spend her summer vacation (yes! Summer vacation!) in the Geneva [mist] to practice speaking French and see friends. I will not complain, she is so full of joy, of enthusiasm and of faith that it seems like a [rayon] of sun decided to settle here. She offered me to give me a hand, so today she’s the one pressing buttons while I’m struggling with my guitar in the Shelter.

17:00 – The telephone rings, it’s time for a hair-cut. Next week-end we are doing the photo-shooting for the CD, and I feel as if I was looking at a Beatles when I look at the mirror in the morning. I must do something. Marine is a home hairdresser. She is both great and wonderful. Yes, both. And I know that you’ve read this blog until now only because you wanted one single thing, it is to have AT LAST her number (+33 6 14 78 26 60) and her email (marine.coiffure@hotmail.com) for to come at your home.

18:30 – Recording again. Strings are new, so I have to tune the guitar between each take.

20:00 – I wonder if I should add a bit of mandolin because of the music style. But the day was long, I feel like stopping. Ana thinks it would be worth recording it. I say ok, let’s try just once. Ana was right. I record the mandolin.

21:00 – We pause to peel potatoes and leeks with the neighbours for the common soup. Nono shows me a vegetable I did not know: the Jerusalem Artichoke. I already said it, life is exciting and full of surprises.

21:45 – While the soup is making bubbles on the fire, Nono comes and listen to her song. She likes it.

22:00 – The soup is tasty. So was this day.

PS: I have nothing against Beatles, it just a question of haircut taste.
PS2: I never do advertising for anyone, even for Marine, whose cell phone number is +33 6 14 78 26 60 and email is marine.coiffure@hotmail.com.

The work goes on, I delivered another song to the sound engineer this week-end. There is not much to tell currently because most of the work is only done on computer. But I start feeling the call of freedom…I don’t dare imagining it yet, but soon these three years of work will come to an end…Yesssss!!!

So today I will go on with the thoughts on our bonds, which have nourished the creation of the CD's songs. Please let me know of your thoughts and reactions. After talking about dilemmas and our bonds with ourselves, here are a few thoughts on our bonds with others.

A few years ago, a book opened my mind to a different vision of relationships. Until then I was stuck in the dilemma I already talked about: either I had to sacrifice other people to protect myself, or I had to sacrifice myself to be with others and not be alone anymore, but then I feared I would disappear. This book showed me it was not a fatality. Here is an extract from the book:

“We have the comfortable habit to describe things in black or right, in positive or negative. It is fair or unfair, one is right or wrong, with subtle variants: one is intellectual or laborer, mathematician or artist, responsible family man or foolish man, traveller or stay-at-home, etc. It is the trap of binary system. As if we could not be, at the same time, a brilliant intellectual or an efficient laborer, being very classic in some domains and innovative in some others.
It is as if reality was not infinitely richer and colourful than our poor little categories, these poor drawers which we try to put it because its diversity and power scare us.
We practice a logic of exclusion and division based on “ “either…or”. We play to the deadly game of “who’s right, who’s wrong”, which puts an emphasis on what separate us instead of giving value to what binds us. One of the most recurring example is this: either we take care of others, or we take care of ourselves, with the consequence that either we cut us from ourselves, or we cut ourselves from others. As we could not take care of others and ourselves at the same time, being close to others without ceasing to be close to ourselves.” (Thomas d’Asembourg, Cessez d’être gentils, soyez vrai !, Editions de l’HOmme, 2001, p. 28)

For me it was a huge discovery. There were other ways to explore than being stuck in my relationship dilemmas. Even if it is difficult to sum it up in so few words, the author says that we function with different parts of ourselves, symbolized by organs: Our tummy, our heart and our head. Our needs (the tummy) make themselves visible through emotions (our heart) like warning lights, showing if our needs where fulfilled or not. These signals are then interpreted by our rational reflection (symbolized by the head) to respond to it.

The problem comes from the fact that we are very poor interpreters of these signals sent by emotions, and therefore we tend to communicate only on the rational level while ignoring what often causes us to think a certain way. When we better understand our emotions and the needs they signal, we can be completely true and honest when we communicate. Then we can work out solutions where no one has to be sacrificed.

“Know yourself”, says the philosopher. “You will know the truth, and the truth shall set you free”, says Jesus.

So for me today I understand I don’t have to chose between being in relationship with other people or not. I can explore what sort of bonds I want to have with others. Then I don’t have to chose between love and freedom, I am convinced it is possible to be deeply attached while being deeply oneself and free at the same time. It is all in the dialogue, the discussion, the negotiation and the building of win-win systems allowing each other to be him or herself. We are free, and we freely chose to bind ourselves, to be in connection. I don’t need to be always scared and trapped in fear. I can abandon myself to be attached, because I know I will not lose myself.

I admit it is quite relaxing to know that.

OooooooooooooooooO

Mixed feelings today.

There is joy because I delivered two songs to the sound engineer. It is good to see that things are progressing. Everytime it is like giving birth, it does not happen without pain, but once it is done, the rest is forgotten!

But today there is also sadness when I hear about what happens in Haiti. Our bassist Hans-Edouard is a Haitian, he told me yesterday that his family had no news from a cousin there.

Solidarity…

Je me note ça quelque part.

OoooooooooooooooO

It snows a lot outside, like in a good part of France currently. After a good time of festivities with family and friends, I come back to this blog. Two chapters are remaining to finish the reflections on ties, but I’ll just make a pause to give some news and wish you a happy new year!

I like the idea of wishing each other a happy new year. First, an occasion to celebrate should never be wasted, because we exist, because we breathe and we are alive. And second because when we wish each other good and beautiful things, we say we love and appreciate each other. I’ll eat that sort of meal as much as I can!

Then there are resolutions. Some friend resolved not to make resolutions. Some others made a list. For me a resolution is like a star: even if we don’t necessarily reach it, it gives a direction.

When I thought about that, I decided I would have only one resolution. I realised I worry a lot about the future, my plans, my project, what I will do or not, and it often prevents me from living in the present. So I decided that even if I still make plans for the future, I will learn to better enjoy the present, and taste the value of every instant.

Do not worry about your life…who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? Seek first his Kingdom and righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. (Mat 6.25,33,34)

It seems Eternity is too precious to waste a single second of it! Mmmh…it would be a good theme for a song…I must write this down somewhere to remember it.

Oh, yeah, almost forgot…I think I have a CD to finish, he he!!! I must admit it is quite thrilling to think that logically all this work will soon BE OVER!!! The marathon resumes, I have to finish the CD for March, because the B.O. (the band – Original Band), leaves for a tour at the beginning of April. We will go in the French Far-West, going from Paris to Limoges while following the littoral. I am still waiting for answers for some cities. It will almost be one concert per evening. Yummy! I must just avoid being sick on this week.

In short, a lot of work and beautiful experiences are ahead. So for you I wish that this year will be filled with wonderful instants of present, enjoyed completely, with God, with others, and with yourself.

Happy New Year 2010!

Gaël Cosendaihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04007532677522364558noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-61912776874971269.post-27278293737314551402009-12-23T19:50:00.011+01:002009-12-24T19:13:05.970+01:00Nos liens (4) - Noël et Nouvel An / Our Ties (4) - Christmas and New Years Eve(English version below)

Noël et Nouvel An.

I am in the bus going back from the office. In the street I can see many flashing banners; stores are filled with starts, lights and garlands. There seem to be fewer lights this year, maybe because of ecological considerations. But it is difficult to ignore the fact that in two days it is Christmas day!

End of year festivities are a powerful telling of our ties. For the whole year we could ignore this, living our lives in our small local universe, in our personal bubbles, but comes this time of the year when we can’t escape. There lie two sources of our fundamental ties, each of them being a title of a song of the CD: Famille (Familiy), and Amis (Friends). Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

If there is a time of the year when both joy and fears collide, Christmas with the family is this time. It is just the way it is, this family we did not chose, this family we both cherish and avoid, this family that sings and grinds, speaking loud and saying nothing. Family manages to be all of that at the same time. Christmas reminds us of where we come from and what we have become. We question our ties with those who left, and we invent our ties with those who just arrived. This grandma died this year, and three babies invited themselves. These cousins left for South America, we will not see them this year. But it will be great to see the other cousins we did not see for long. Or this year will be quite intimate, because there are not a lot of people anymore. In short, there are all our biological and historical ties in Christmas.

By the way, isn’t Christmas celebrating the birth of a tie between God and us? The one who was called Emmanuel (God with us) came to remind us of the importance of ties (you shall love…) and told us that we were not alone in the universe because God cares about us…

A week later comes New Year’s Eve, telling us about our ties with others. Starting from a certain age, we celebrate it with friends. Every year, everyone wonders where he or she will be, and most important, with who. A summary of our ties with others is revealed. Who is close to me? Who am I close to? What is the shape of my relationships? Will I be invited? Who will I invite? We meet with friends who changed, with whom we reinvent our ties. We think of these people who are not there and we miss them. They live in us and we hope we live in them. Why do we send Season’s greeting cards, unless we want our ties not to disappear but to be strengthened?

So this festive season takes a photograph of our ties; it draws a map of our bonds. Somehow, all these stories and memories and fellowship are like these lines that children draw between numbered dots on a sheet of paper. A picture appears. And this drawing, made of all our ties, has something that looks like our face.

Yes, it’s me on this picture. These festivities are the occasion for me to gather all these ties inside of me, whether it concerns people who are there or not. Full of all these ties, I can see a better picture of myself and start inventing who I will be tomorrow, and who we will be.

So I tak the opportunity of the connection of this blog to wish you a wonderful and meaningful time of festivities. Let God fill you with ties, bonds, links, whatever you want to call them!

Gaël Cosendaihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04007532677522364558noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-61912776874971269.post-64578609317105388182009-12-18T12:41:00.003+01:002009-12-18T13:02:22.367+01:00Nos liens (3) – avec soi-même // Our ties (3) – with oneself

(English version)

I'm a poor lonesome cowboy
I'm a long long way from home

There are guys who just figure
Have a problem with a gun
And a finger on a trigger
Can be dangerous, hurt someone

But problems solve much better
By keeping calm and true

I'm a poor lonesome cowboy
But it doesn't bother me
'Cause this poor lonesome cowboy
Prefers a horse for company
Got nothing against women
But I wave them all goodbye
My horse and me keep riding
We don't like being tied

There it is, my computer is like new, everything has been reinstalled. I could resume the work of editing. Everything is white outside, snow covered the land last night. I have a bit of time this morning, let’s go on with the theme of the CD.

One day I was quite lost in my life, and I asked a friend: “what’s the purpose of life?” He answered: “It is to learn to love and to be loved.”. I always kept his answer deep in my heart. Jesus says exactly the same thing. Like we already read, for him the purpose of life lies in being tied with God, with others, and with oneself. Here are a few thoughts about these three dimensions, beginning with being in relationship with oneself.

We were born in relationship with a family, but in order to grow up we have to learn to establish ties with ourselves. To become an adult, “man will leave his father and mother”. And only after that he “will be united to” his wife. It is as if we needed to learn how to establish ties with ourselves before being able to do it with others. Otherwise we will be tempted to use the other person to fill our emptiness or to replace our parents. However, loving someone means this person remains free, and when we use people we don’t respect them anymore. So we have to learn how to become good companions for ourselves. I have a model for that: he is called Lucky Luke. No Kidding. Here is the song he always sings when he’s going towards the sun on his faithful Jolly Jumper:

I'm a poor lonesome cowboy
I'm a long long way from home

If Lucky Luke left his family, he knows how to be a good parent for himself. He does not expect others to meet his needs, because he takes care of them by himself. He is autonomous. But he has not forgotten his home, he sings about it. He left, but he did not cut the ties. He knows where he comes from, his story and his family are in him, and it is a good thing. He is in peace with his roots, with whatever the good and the bad it represents.

There are guys who just figure
Have a problem with a gun
And a finger on a trigger
Can be dangerous, hurt someone

Lucky Luke knows some things can hurt. He learned to set boundaries. When other people transgressed our inner space, we fear it might happen again. As a result, we create a safety distance preventing everyone to get too close to us. But Lucky Luke thought about it, and he understood that some things done to him were not normal and unfair, and that other people should respect his boundaries like anybody else. So he is secure, and he can face things differently. He does not run away or defend himself with his gun:
But problems solve much better By keeping calm and true

Lucky Luke learned to be true with himself, welcoming everything in him without judgement. He is in true relationship with himself. Therefore he does not neglect a part of himself. He can make choices knowing it is him who chooses and not his fears, or his feelings of obligation or of anger. So he is free to establish ties, and he does: he knows how to commit himself for people as long as there is injustice.

I'm a poor lonesome cowboy
But it doesn't bother me
'Cause this poor lonesome cowboy
Prefers a horse for company
Got nothing against women
But I wave them all goodbye
My horse and me keep riding
We don't like being tied

Lucky Luke knows how to be alone, but in fact is not so lonely: he has got his friend Jolly Jumper. It is a paradox in deed to say: we don’t like being tied. If he says we, it means he is already tied, but he feely chose to whom.

In short, I think it is important to become a good companion for oneself if we want to become good companions for others. God plays a major role in this development, but we will come back to that in the third part.

What about you? What do you think “being in relationship with oneself” means? What does “Leaving father and mother” means?

In the next episode: to tie oneself to others.

Gaël Cosendaihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04007532677522364558noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-61912776874971269.post-31458927598657400642009-12-11T13:35:00.005+01:002009-12-18T12:41:14.548+01:00Nos liens (2) - Le dilemme // Our Ties (2) – The dilemma(English version below)

A suivre…

My computer is currently working on its own, I am re-installing all my programs because of a virus. It takes time, so while it’s doing its job, I’ll keep on writing about the theme of the CD : our bonds…

Like I said in my previous post, bonds are both attractive and scary. What’s going on there? It is as if we had to choose between impossible directions:

To Stay or to Grow, to Be an Eternal Child or to Cut Ties

There are bonds in our lives right from the moment we were conceived. We exist because a man and a woman had a special bond together. And right from birth we discover that bonds can be threatened. The child is separated from her mother when he comes out, he has no choice, he has to be born if he is to become himself. So right from the beginning we face a dilemma, which is going to happen again when the grown up child leaves the family home: to become ourselves we must leave, separate ourselves and become distinct from our family, but then what happens to these bonds? And if we want to keep these bonds, can we become ourselves?

To Love or to Be Free, To Be Lonely or to Be Imprisoned

Without bonds we die in our loneliness, but within them we fear we will be strangled to death. We desperately look for bonds to get away from loneliness, but as soon as bonds start to become too strong, they turn into menacing monsters. Either I am free, and I have to accept to live without bonds, without love, or I accept to be tied but I have to give up freedom. Am I free if someone else is able to make choices that will impact my life? Will I disappear if I love this person so much? Do I have to choose between loneliness and a prison? A bond that becomes too important represents the risk of becoming dependant, vulnerable, defenceless. In fact, behind this lies the fear of being abandoned. It would hurt too much to be betrayed. We have to protect ourselves, build a safety distance, even cutting ties if necessary. Otherwise we have to renounce freedom…in fact, it would mean giving up life itself.

To Take Care of Oneself or To Take Care of Others, To Sacrifice Oneself or to Sacrifice Others

So how can we attach ourselves to each other? If one thinks he or she is not good enough to be interesting at all, one will have to disguise him or herself. We try to guess what the others desire in order to fulfil their demands, and maybe we will be worth their friendship. I remember that when I was asked: “what about you, what do you feel like doing?”, I could basically answer nothing. I had such a habit to do what other people desired that I did not even know what I personally liked or not, what I really desired. I thought that if I wanted friends, I had to sacrifice myself, because if I tried to exist, I would have to sacrifice others and I would necessarily end up alone.

What can we do with such ugly options?
