Oser rêver (3) : le budget prévisionnel / Daring to dream (3) – the budget

(English version below)

OooooooooooooooooooooO

There it is. I just told my office I would be in vacations for the two first weeks of February. It is time to start recording. Until then, here are a few elements about all the preparatory work I’ve been doing since September 2007.

Once one has enough songs to form an album, comes the time to launch the project. The first stage may appear a bit barbarian: the preparatory budget. In short, it means : “how much will this cost?” Although this part of the project might appear hard to do, boring and even painful (ouch! this will be expensive!), it revealed itself to be one of the most joyful part of the work.

The reason is simple: it is delightful to see your dream being shaped into reality. So in last september, I sat down at my desk to look at that. Here is how it goes.

I have the list of songs in front of me. I take the first song, I close my eyes, and I try to imagine it, I listen to it in my head, trying different instruments on it…"Let’s try with a piano…no…what could be better for this song? Why not an accordion? Yes! It sounds right, it fits with the style I want for this song…” etc.
Then I remember of a friend who told me about a professional accordionist he knew. I pick up the phone, and I ask him if he has his number. Then I call the accordionist, and we discuss. I tell him about what I want to do, what he can offer me, how much time it is going to take, what the cost will be, etc. I try to see if I feel good with him. When I hang up the phone, I have an accordionist for this song, and a price. So I put this on my spreadsheet.
The hardest part of this work is actually...shyness, because I always feel very small in front of professionals…

So, little by little, instrument by instrument, contact by contact, cost by cost, the project is built.

Once again I try not to put too many limits. Not yet. First the goals, then the means. But I already start thinking about how I could make it cheaper…
