La deuxième semaine / The Second Week

(English version below)

OooooooooooooooooooooooO

On friday of the first week, I could have a computer lent to me while I was solving my problem. So I could start the recordings, and this week was not completely lost! And the second week was good then.

The present idea is to record a musical basis to the songs (only guitar and voice) in order to go in the studio and record the drums. Once we have the final drum part, we will build the rest of the song around it.

Here is how it works. There’s a whole work to be done before being able to record. I must:
- find the right tempo. If too slow, the song will lack dynamism, if too quick, it will lack nuances.
- make a track of basic synthetic drums. This is what I will have in my ears while recording the guitar, in order to play at the right speed.
- finalise the song’s structure: which introduction? which progression? which ending? Is there an instrumental part, a change in the tune, etc.? When it is a song we already perform in concert, all of this is already more or less done. But for other songs, the whole thing has done. The hardest thing is to play the song while imagining how it would sound at the end, one must plan everything in advance.
- chose the right guitar. There is a population of 8 guitars here at the moment! Friends lent me some so I could have a wide range of different sounds at disposal.
- chose the right microphone, with the right position, etc.

In short, all of this can take hours before the first chord is actually recorded. On the second week I could record the basis of 3 songs and I started the 4th one. At least these vacations were not completely wasted! And it gave me an idea of the amount of work the whole recording would represent. It is hUuge, and I am only at the beginning! So it is like a long journey : one must walk step by step. While enjoying the view.
